Kings County Cinema Society will be screening Ju Dou (1990, 95min) at Ortine Cafe. One of the first triumphs for Zhang Yimou, now considered an international superstar after helming Hero, House of Flying Daggers, and the spectacular opening ceremonies from the Beijing Olympic Games last year. In this colorful, sumptuous early masterpiece, Gong Li, his muse, plays a young concubine enslaved by a cruel merchant at a dye mill in rural 1920’s China.
