In Southeast Asia, there was green architecture before there was green architecture. Traveling through the region in the 1960s, American architect Dorothy West Pelzer anticipated the “green revolution” in a series of documentary photos. In 2008, Barbara J. Anello followed Pelzer’s path in Viet Nam, Cambodia and Indonesia, revisiting specific sites and recording the impact of forty years on traditional architecture and thecultural systems that sustain it. Ms. Anello’s presentation includes photographs by herself and Dorothy West Pelzer (copyright Pelzer, unless otherwise noted, Courtesy National Anthropological Archives, Smithsonian Institute and theInstitute for Southeast Asian Studies, Singapore).
