Tonight Kings County Cinema Society presents Vox Pop Movie Night with a screening of Gojira (Godzilla/ Japan, 1954, 98min) .The original UNCUT Japanese version (with English subtitles) of the classic Kaiju (giant monster) movie which played for over two months at Film Forum in Manhattan. Secret atomic tests waken the prehistoric behemoth knowns as Gojira from his eons long slumber. Angry (wouldn’t you be?) and massively radioactive, the big green guy goes on a rampage in Tokyo, destroying everything in his path inclduing buildings, airplanes and toy tanks. The original Japanese film is a somber, dark, enormously entertaing fable starring the great Takashi Shimura (Seven Samurai). Its strong anti-nuclear message was blunted by numerous cuts in the United States. This is the restored original version, with superb black and white photography and a great musical score by Akira Ifukube.”Mangificent and absured… As crass as it is visionary, Godzilla belongs with—and might well trump— Dr. Strangelove as a daring attempt to fashion a terrible poetry from the mind-melting horror of atomic warfare.” J Hoberman, Village Voice
