BoHo Bodega, the world’s first pop up shop focused on bringing easily accessible environmentally-sound products to consumers, is set to open for five days in New York City from October 20, 2009. BoHo Bodega brings world’s first non-profit green pop up shop to New York City. Innovative green concept bodega will donate all proceeds to environmental charities.

This temporary bodega-style store will be based on New York’s SoHo/NoLita border, offering the foods, beverages and household products found in typical bodegas across New York City, yet all with an eco-focus. In addition goods will be offered at a greatly reduced price, to encourage shoppers who believe green is beyond their budget to try healthier, eco-friendly alternatives to regular purchases.

BoHo Bodega will also feature a series of educational seminars and workshops during the daytime. In the evening, food and drink tastings will be accompanied by music and entertainment from local bands and DJs.
Goods in-store have been donated by eco-conscious brands including Green Forest, Kiss My Face, Organic India, Planet, Simply Organic, Vita Coco, Sambazon and Divine Chocolate; most of which will also be hosting events during the bodega’s opening. All proceeds will be donated to a variety of charities, including the Council on the Environment of New York City (CENYC), the non-profit of choice of BoHo Bodega.

Sakai and co-producer Julia Falkenstein of MAKE have designed, fitted and built the Bodega in conjunction with Build It Green! NYC, New York City’s only non-profit retail outlet for salvaged and surplus building materials. BIG’s mission is to keep materials out of the landfill, while offering deep discounts on their resale. BoHo Bodega will be constructed with environmentally friendly, energy efficient, sustainable, recycled, recyclable, compostable, and re-purposed materials and products.

BoHo Bodega is also launched in conjunction with CENYC. This hands-on non-profit, and a 501-C-3 tax-exempt organization, improves New York City’s quality of life through environmental programs that transform communities block by block and empowers all New Yorkers to secure a clean and healthy environment for future generations. Celebrating its 40th Anniversary in 2010, CENYC engages residents in a variety of innovative programs, including Greenmarket, Open Space Greening, Environmental Education and the Office of Recycling Outreach and Education.

The temporary store will be open from Wednesday October 21 to Sunday October 25
