Kings County Cinema Society hosts a screening of Howard Zinn: You Can’t Be Neutral On a Moving Train (2004, 78min) a film by Deb Ellis and Denis Mueller, from First Run Features. From First Run: “This acclaimed film looks at the amazing life of the renowned historian, activist and author. Following his early days as a shipyard labor organizer and bombardier in World War II, Zinn became an academic rebel and leader of civil disobedience in a time of institutionalized racism and war. His influential writings shine light on and bring voice to factory workers, immigrant laborers, African Americans, Native Americans and the working poor.” Featuring interviews with Zinn, Noam Chomsky, Alice Walker, Tom Hayden and more, with narration provided by Matt Damon, and music from Woodie Guthrie, Pearl Jam and Billy Bragg.

“It’s a brisk introductory documentary that makes a useful omnibus profile of the antiwar activist, historian, and author of “A People’s History of the United States” …long enough to get the point across and short enough to get you back out on the streets, challenging the system.” — Wesley Morris, Boston Globe full review

Drinks to follow at Soda Bar right across the street, where they’ll host a reading of some J.D. Salinger, the massively influential mid-century author-turned media darling and publicity whore, who died last week while attempting to top Evel Knievel’s record jump of fifty stacked cars on his Harley XR-750.
