This Wednesday Kings County Cinema Society pays tribute to the recently departed Lena Horne, a national treasure from Bed-Stuy Brooklyn, with a screening of the classic musical Cabin in the Sky (1943, 98min). One of the first significant all-black productions (featuring Horne, Ethel Waters, Eddie “Rochester” Anderson, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and his Orchestra, and more) the film recasts “Faust” as Southern gospel-folklore, with Little Joe (Rochester) caught between the love of his good wife and the temptations of bad girl Horne…and in a tug-of-war between the emissaries of the Lord and Satan. The directorial debut of Vincente Minnelli (An American in Paris, Gigi), and one of his best.
