Thursday at Ortine Kings County Cinema Society have Carmen Jones (1954, 105min) Otto Preminger’s colorful, semi-experimental transplantation of Bizet’s most famous opera to an African-American military base in the WWII south. As the eponymous sultry hero, Dorothy Dandridge became the first black woman nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. A young Harry Belafonte co-stars as straight arrow soldier Joe.
